E-mail forwarding for societies, JCRs, etc.

CUSU runs a variety of e-mail addresses/lists, e.g. for societies, JCRs & MCRs, campaigns, and others. Only those under CUSU's control contain @cusu.cam.ac.uk in the address.

Non-Society alias addresses

If you need changes made to any @cusu.cam.ac.uk e-mail addresses/lists, please contact the Services Officer, who will endeavour to make changes as soon as possible.

Please note: once the Services Officer has entered the new information, there is a short delay of a few hours before the change works through the Hermes database.

Societies

CUSU recognises that, because changes to the officers running any society take place frequently, communication can sometimes be difficult.

CUSU offers societies an e-mail forwarding service, which  a large number of societies already find useful.

Making communication easier

Mail addressed to societyname@cusu.cam.ac.uk will be bounced (automatically forwarded) to the society contact given.

For example, The Folk Song Singers (a fictional society) is run by the conductor whose e-mail is xyz12@cam.ac.uk . Any e-mails sent to folksongs@cusu.cam.ac.uk (which is the name they reserved) will automatically be bounced on to xyz12@cam.ac.uk

Updating the contact

Please login to the Societies Directory to change the forwarding address for your Society.

Setting the alias as an outgoing address

The societyname@cusu.cam.ac.uk alias system is not a real e-mail account as such, just a forwarding address.

However, you can set the e-mail address as an outgoing address in your mail client, so that e-mails appear to come from that address rather than your real e-mail address.

In Hermes Webmail:

  1. Login to Hermes Webmail as normal.
  2. Click on 'Manage' in the top row.
  3. Click on the 'Roles' button.
  4. Click 'Add new role'.
  5. Enter societyname (as in societyname@cusu.cam.ac.uk) in the boxes marked 'Alias'.
  6. Enter the society's name in 'From personal name'.
  7. Enter the full alias (e.g. societyname@cusu.cam.ac.uk) in 'From address'.
  8. If you want mail sent from that address to go into a different sentmail box, enter the name of a mailbox in 'Fcc', e.g. 'societyname'.
  9. You can also add a different signature if you want.
  10. Click on 'Add/update entry'.
  11. Now when you click on 'Compose' you will get the option of the default @cam address role, or your new societyname role.
