Right to Light

We, as Cambridge students, believe that all people who live in Cambridge have a right to feel secure in the streets and green areas of the city, at all times of the day and night. For several years, the Cambridge University Students' Union has expressed concern about the lack of lighting in certain areas of Cambridge, but we have yet to see any meaningful improvements to the situation. This does not only affect students, but all members of the Cambridge community. Not only do people feel unsafe walking and cycling through these areas at night, there have been attacks in many of these locations in recent years. We call on you to improve the lighting in the following areas, which have consistently been listed as inadequately lit by students, colleges and University staff.

Garrett Hostel Bridge
Queens Road
Trinity Lane
Mortimer Road
Parkers Piece
Herschel Road
St. Edward's Passage
Jesus Green

Better lighting will not eliminate violence, but it is the first step towards addressing a very real and urgent problem. We are expressing our deep concern at lack of improvement over the past years, and are calling for a genuine commitment to addressing the insufficient lighting in Cambridge.
