Communication Networks for Students in Cambridge
This page covers the communication networks at Cambridge University between students and students, college officers (such as JCR/MCR Presidents) and college officers, and between CUSU and students. The different communication networks are:
- The CUSU Bulletin: the news that CUSU send out to everyone about what its getting up to.
- The CUSU-MS Postal Service: a postal service for all students to use to contact any other student.
- Inter-Collegiate Mailing List: for the relevant college JCR and MCR committee officers to contact each other.
- CUSU Executive Reports and Plans: termly reports of what CUSU has done and is planning to do.
- CUSU Executive Council Updates: less official than the reports, but every two weeks to fill in the gaps.
All these networks are detailed below. Please read. If you have any questions or criticisms, email the CUSU Communications Officer at communications@cusu.cam.ac.uk.
The CUSU Bulletin
The CUSU Bulletin is emailed out once a week to all students in the University. The bulletin contains news from CUSU and its autonomous campaigns, a summary of CUSU's activities, as well as Society News.
If you are a representative of any registered Cambridge University society, or a charity, you can send in an entry to be considered for the bulletin. However, due to space constraints and policy considerations, we cannot guarantee that every event will go in.
You must include:
- The name of your society.
- The date, time, and location of the event.
- A brief description
- A contact person and their email address.
The deadline is 5pm on each Saturday, and the email is sent out on Sunday evening.
The CUSU Communications Officer is also responsible for this Bulletin and can be contacted at communications@cusu.
CUSU-MS Postal Service
The CUSU Mail Service (CUSU-MS) is a free service set up by CUSU, operating at the CUSU offices, that allows students and societies to send mail between colleges. It provides a similar service to the University Messenger Service (UMS), which student are not allowed to use.
Regulations for the use of CUSU-MS are as follows:
- This service is for students only. Mail envelopes 'CUSU-MS' and clearly write the name and college of the recipient.
- Mail can only be sent to colleges, CUSU, the Graduate Union and Girton Wolfson Court. Mail cannot be sent to University departments.
- Mail is normally delivered in one working day, with delivery guaranteed in two working days.
- Please use envelopes or secure pieces of paper with cellotape or a staple. Scraps of paper will not be delivered.
- Letters larger than A4 size, posters and parcels cannot be sent via CUSU-MS.
- It is recommended that no items of personal or monetary value are sent through CUSU-MS.
- Mailings of more than 50 items should be taken to the CUSU offices on the New Museum Site, where a small charge will be made for their delivery. For enquiries about bulk mailing, contact business@cusu.cam.ac.uk.
For general enquiries, contact the CUSU Coordinator at coordinator@cusu.ac.uk.
Inter-Collegiate Officer Mailing Lists
There are a number of inter-collegiate networks of similar JCR and MCR officers. Each of these networks has its own mailing lists such that members can communicate with each other. It should be noted, though, that these mailing lists are only intended for communication relating to the work of the officers on the network. They are not meant for general publicity, and should not be used by individuals who are not officers on the mailing list. Members of each list are of course free to decide on if and how they forward emails they receive.
There are inter-collegiate networks for the following college officers, plus who to contact for information about the list, for instance, on how to join…

CUSU Executive Reports and Plans
These are documents that are released by the CUSU Chair at the first CUSU Council of each term, that cover what the Executive member has accomplished since the last Reports and Plans, and what they intend to do before the next. Each member of the CUSU Executive is required to contribute to this.
The document is not only presented at CUSU Council, but stored online at www.cusu.cam.ac.uk/union/exec/, and also emailed out to voting members of CUSU Council and interested others.
CUSU Executive Council Updates
At each CUSU Council except for the first of each term, and often as a bridge of sorts between Reports and Plans, members of the Committees, Campaign Teams, and the Executive keep Council informed of what they're up to.
These reports are are less formal than the CUSU Executive Reports and Plans, but are recorded in the minutes of the Council, which are emailed out to voting members of CUSU Council and interested others and uploaded here.
