Societies

Basic information about Societies at Cambridge University

Societies in the University are regulated through the Societies Syndicate, a body (set up in the 1960s) which receives funding to pass on to University Societies in the form of grants. This situation is unlike that at virtually every other university in the country, where societies are regulated and receive funding through the respective Student Union.

CUSU believes that Societies are an important part of student life at Cambridge and should be encouraged and fostered. To this end, although CUSU receives no direct funding for society functions, it wishes to provide quality services for them.

In summary:

  1. University-wide societies at Cambridge are not regulated through the Students' Union (CUSU)
  2. Instead, the Societies Syndicate, through the Junior Proctor, regulate registered societies
  3. Not all societies choose to register, however doing so confers some benefits
  4. There are also many college-based societies, run through the JCRs and MCRs
  5. CUSU will continue its essential role of providing good quality and ever more facilities for societies of all types
