Cambridge University Opera Society [CUOS]
CUOS organises and supports all kinds of opera-related activities: staged productions, concerts, masterclasses, workshops, recitals, trips and education projects.
By combining such a range of skills and interests (music, theatre, design and administration), opera offers great opportunities to all sorts of people. For many students, opera projects are the most ambitious and collaborative things they do while in Cambridge, and few student activities are ultimately so rewarding or memorable.
Notable alumni include David Atherton, Mark Elder, David Pountney, Julia Hollander, Michael Chance and Andrew Kennedy. Since 2004, our large-scale productions have included The Marriage of Figaro (Mozart), Hansel and Gretel (Humperdinck) and three major twentieth-century works: The Rake's Progress (Stravinsky) and The Turn of the Screw and Peter Grimes (Britten). We have also fostered contemporary operatic composition in Cambridge in the form of Shakespeare Deranged (2006) and Three Portraits of Nero (2007). Our 2008 production is Don Giovanni (Mozart) and we also have a rolling programme of masterclasses and opera trips. This a great time to get involved!
Membership of CUOS only costs £5 and is open to everyone, both performers and participants; Cambridge University members and the general public. The society's website advertises future events and carries a wealth of information on past productions.
