CUSU Higher Education Funding campaign
The struggle for fairer student funding has been CUSU's top priority campaign ever since maintenance grants were scrapped and tuition fees introduced in 1997. CUSU's policy on HE Funding is unequivocal: to ensure the return of the universal maintenance grant and the abolition of tuition fees, and to resist any move towards differential 'top-up-fees'. It is a fact that students now graduate, on average, £12,000 in debt. The abolition of the maintenance grant and the introduction of tuition fees have had a crippling effect on students. Dropout rates currently stand at an average of 20%, and by far the most significant factor in this is the financial one. Furthermore, the current system of funding discourages potential students from the poorest backgrounds from applying to university. CUSU and the NUS are now winning the academic arguments in favour of a better funding system; our HE Funding campaign aims to create the political pressure to force the change.
