Contact

Contact is the student visiting service for the elderly and housebound in Cambridge. Volunteers agree to spend one hour a week during term time offering conversation and companionship to a particular individual, who might otherwise not see more than a handful of people in their entire week. Although it sounds simple, it is hard to exaggerate the impact this scheme has: brightening the lives of the lonely, offering undergraduates a respite from the hectic pace of university life, and addressing an important aspect of "social exclusion" which is often overlooked in favour of more immediately visible problems.
