2009 Fund Guidelines

The university will be celebrating its 800th anniversary in 2009. The 800th Anniversary Steering Committee is pleased to announce the start of 2009 related activities with the launch of the 2009 Fund. £250,000 will be distributed over the course of three rounds from Michaelmas 2007 to Michaelmas 2008 to support University or College affiliated groups or student societies wishing to stage their own 800th anniversary related events in 2009. Applications for grants of typically up to £5000 are welcome for activities that promote or celebrate the academic and cultural pursuits of the university. Projects may involve collaboration with external partners but the application must be made by a university affiliated group. The application deadline for the first round of funding is 22 November 2007. Please find attached guidelines for applicants and an application form. Copies of the forms will be available to download from www.cam.ac.uk/800 shortly.

Active Community Fund

Did you know that you could get a grant for your society's outreach activities?

The University of Cambridge's Active Community Fund exists to encourage volunteering by University students and staff.

To be funded, your society's activities must be charitable or educational in some way.

The sort of things that might be funded include:

• a hands-on science road show for members of the public

• teaching photography skills to a local community group

• planning and performing a play with a local school

• producing Internet resources about African culture for use in schools

• coaching school children in cricket

• organising a cultural festival for local residents

• and many other ideas….

If you think your existing activities or future plans are charitable or educational, and you need some funding to develop them, please get in touch.

You can apply for up to £5,000. The next deadline for applications is 12th October 2007.

If you would like a copy of the guidelines/application form, please visit http://www.cam.ac.uk/cambuniv/volunteering/activecommfund.html. To discuss your bid, please phone Emma Wenborn, Community Affairs Assistant on 01223 339666 or email emma.wenborn at admin.cam.ac.uk

If your society does not want to run such a project, but individuals are interested in volunteering, please contact Student Community Action on 01223 350365 or email mail at cambridgesca.org.uk

Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Festival 2008

Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Festival in Cambridge
22nd – 31st October 2008

Led by University of Cambridge, with partner organisations

Following the success of the Cambridge Science Festival, which annually attracts over 20,000 people, the Cambridge University Office of External Affairs and Communications is currently in the process of organising and implementing a new annual Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Festival, or 'Festival of Ideas' which will take place from 22nd - 31st October, 2008.
Taking as its model the annual Science Festival in format, and targeting families and children in particular, the Festival will involve many University departments, student societies and museums, as well as a number of external organisations and community groups.
Falling within term time and the October half term, we are looking to provide a range of activities and events that can be attended by both school groups and families, and which reflect Cambridge's rich history of arts, humanities and social sciences.
Currently in the preliminary stages of organisation we are in the process of discussing the aims, objectives and scope of the Festival, and are seeking ideas for events and activities to be included within the Festival programme.
We are interested in hearing from any student societies who would like to be involved and feel that they could contribute to the Festival programme. Limited funding towards putting on activities may be available in some cases, and all events in the Festival will be widely publicised through programme and poster distribution.
Any societies interested in putting forward an idea for an event or finding out more about the Festival is asked to contact Nicola Buckley, njb1010 at cam.ac.uk or telephone (7)64069.

Black History Month

To celebrate Black History Month, a national initiative which takes place every October and promotes knowledge of Black History and experience, the Cambridge University Office of External Affairs and Communications is currently looking for student societies who are already planning, or would like to be involved in events and activities to be held this October. We will be helping to put together a programme of events and accompanying publicity.
As a precursor to next years inaugural Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Festival which will take place in October 2008, we are also looking for any Student Societies who would like to be involved in events or activities relating to arts, humanities or social sciences, to be held in this years October half term (15 – 19 Oct) for children and families.
Any societies interested in putting forward an idea for an event for either of these activities is asked to contact Nicola Buckley, njb1010 at cam.ac.uk or telephone (7)64069.

Enterprise Week Prize

Enterprise Week this year runs from 12-18 November and last year around 261 events were organised by the universities that got involved. Please click on the following link for further information: www.enterpriseweek.org/resources/activitysuggestions

A quick and easy way to get involved is Make Your Mark in 60 Seconds on Social Enterprise Day (Thursday 15 November)

Just show students a video available on www.makeyourmarkchangelives.org of four young social entrepreneurs pitching their ideas in 60 seconds to a panel of judges including The Apprentice's Tim Campbell, Peter Jones of Dragons' Den and Glastonbury's Emily Eavis. Then students vote for the winner which will be announced at 6pm on Thursday 15 November. Your Student Union will then be challenged to develop their own enterprising ideas for social and environmental change and submit their pitches to www.makeyourmarkchangelives.org there will be a toolkit available.

Once you've planned your events, you can register your participation on www.enterpriseweek.org/register or drop me an email with what you are doing to get involved. When you register your event with us, it becomes 'official' and you'll have access to free balloons and pens to help publicise your event.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Alex Jacobs

Navigating the University

Soon, I want CUSU to publish some helpful guidelines, especially targeted at new society founders, on how to make their way through the labyrinth of Cambridge red tape and get to what they need.

If anyone has specific ideas or tales of their experiences with the likes of the Societies Syndicate, the Junior Proctor, venue managers, etc., or would like to help compile a guide, just let me know at services@cusu
