Target Scheme 2011-12

targetMany students from state schools don't even consider applying to Cambridge. Some are dissuaded from applying by the myths and prejudices that continue to surround the University, often perpetuated by an Oxbridge-hungry media.

The Target Visits scheme aims to increase the proportion of undergraduates coming from under-represented backgrounds through encouraging more applications. The scheme contacts every state sector sixth form in the country, informing them about Target Visits and giving the school the opportunity to receive a talk from a Cambridge undergraduate about life at Cambridge, or university in general. At Easter or in late June or early July, the volunteers go out to schools to talk to prospective applicants.

Volunteers aim to narrow the gap between perception and reality through talking about their own personal experiences - their academic life, their social life and their experience of the application procedure. Many pupils lack confidence when it comes to the admissions process, particularly the interview procedure, and we find that peer dialogue and advice can help to boost a student's self-belief.
