National Demo against fees

Fees demonstrationWhat's it all about? Top up fees are now the reality facing most students, and CUSU is joining with all of the other Students' Unions across the country to put pressure on the government not to raise the cap in 2010.  Last year, this saw us demonstrating on the streets of London as part of the NUS Admissions Impossible campaign.

Facts to make you think about getting involved.

It is important that MPs are made aware of students' dissatisfaction with this method of funding Higher Education. Chancellors of universities will always charge as much as they are able to. MPs are the only people who can stop them having this opportunity to ply students with debt.  If the cap is raised in 2010, universities will be able to charge varying amounts, and finance will become a major influence in people's decisions about university.  Top-up fees are likely to become more of a barrier to Widening Participation and Access than they already are.

What is happening?  This year, CUSU are hoping to run a Top-Up fees week at the beginning of Lent term.  There will be plenty of opportunity to get involved with a range of activities.

Cambridge against fees

Fees DemonstrationLast year, CUSU staged its own demonstration against top-up fees as a follow-up to the NUS rally in London. It took place outside the Guild Hall on 20th Feb 2007 with speakers including the NUS president, the CUSU President and the HE Funding Officer.  Students from Anglia Ruskin University also attended. We obtained alot of signatures for our protest which was presented to the Vice-Chancellor.
