Black and Minority Ethnic Campaign

The Black Students' Campaign (BSC) exists to voice the concerns, address the issues, cater to the needs of, and improve the educational and social environment for Ethnic Minority Students in Cambridge at both undergraduate and graduate level.

'Black' is an all-embracing term used to refer to all students of ethnic minority origin who by virtue of being non-white are likely to have a different experience from their counterparts.

BSC is an autonomous union that depends on the support of those it represents to achieve the objectives at the core of its functions.

The Black Students' Campaign, as a representative body of CUSU, has a vote on each motion brought to CUSU Council.

Please sign up on the Black Students' Campaign's new mailing list, and join the Facebook group, to be kept updated on what the campaign is doing and how you can get involved.

Joint Committee on Academic Performance

The Joint Committee on Academic Performance, was established by the Council and the General Board to act as a central focus for discussion of matters relating to performance in Tripos examinations and to make recommendations as appropriate to the central bodies.

A reasearch project, was launched and overseen by the Joint Committee, entitled 'The Undergraduate experience of Cambridge among three ethnic minority groups'. The aim of this project was to gain a better understanding of the experiences of students from Bangladeshi, Pakistani, and Black British homes whilst they are in Cambridge, and to identify specific issues whihc affect them, along with the ways in which these may have an impact on their academic performance.

The project was completed in 2005 and the report released on the 13th March 2006, reaching the conclusion that ethnicity is not in itself a factor determining accademic performance, although there remain substantial differences in academic achivement between different British ethnic groups.

'In The Blood' by Suzan-Lori Parks

The Black Students' Campaign joins forces with CUSU Anti-Racism to literally move you in a way that has never been done before.

This play is the story of Hester, Hester la Negrita, the mother, the worker, the oppressed black woman with a sense of humour the size of the States and no money to feed her children. The music is straining through the theatre, the set is banging and the people are shouting to the beat that jumps through everything, every seat, every head, every complacent conservative and mindless mind. Hester la Negrita will jump through your head like a hip-hop migraine.

'In the Blood' is both an opportunity to show an innovative piece in a popular Cambridge theater and serves as a hugely influential sociam message to the students of Cambridge.' (Lyeanne Beckford-Jones Part 1 SPS student of New Hall College, Cambridge)

Through the universal medium of drama, music and dance we hope to bring issues to that affect us all to the forefront in thought-provoking and truly mind blowing experience.
