Dear all,
The end of term is finally upon us, but before everyone heads off home for
Christmas there are still plenty of exciting things to finish off your
term.
Don't forget that Tuesday sees voting across all Faculties in the Faculty
Rep elections - either online or in person, for both undergrads and
graduates. There is also the excitement of a special Students' Union
Council meeting on Tuesday evening to debate the ongoing occupation of the
Lady Mitchell Hall - please do either come along or make your views known
to your College representatives before they come and vote on your behalf.
Wednesday sees a day of national strike action from the public sector
unions, and Cambridge lecturers are joining that to decry the changes to
pay and pensions which are damaging our ability to retain the world's best
teaching staff. If you want to show support with them, come out on
Wednesday to rally with CUSU and other students at Great St. Mary's at
11:30am, where we will do a short march to Parkers' Piece.
Aside from all these things, please do check out below what the last week
of term has in store for societies and activities. A special plug for RAG
Jailbreak 2012, whose applications close Wednesday!
Whatever you get up to this week, have a great Christmas and a Happy New
Year. See you all next term!
Gerard Tully

have got as far as Buenos Aires, Washington and Dubai. Help raise £40,000;
how far could you go?

Professor Richard Weber will be talking about 'The Bomber Problem' in probability, including recent discoveries and unsolved conjectures. The talk should appeal to those who like applied probability, optimisation and recreational mathematics.
The model has many non-military applications such as in investment and water reservoir management, but is traditionally posed in "plane language": A bomber plane is flying towards a target where it will drop its bombs. On its way to the target, the bomber randomly encounters enemy fighter planes. It must defend itself by shooting these down, using its supply of air-to-air missiles. The more missiles that it uses for one encounter the more likely it is to survive that encounter, but then it has fewer missiles left for future encounters. How should the missiles be used so as to maximize the probability that the bomber reaches its target?

Do you believe that the house of Lords needs reform or do you think that the system works perfectly well? Whatever your political opinion do come along to hear Lord Norton's speech entitled 'Reform of the House of Lords'.
Dubbed "The United Kingdom's Greatest living expert on Parliament" Lord Norton has had a long and varied career as an author, an academic and a conservative Peer. He formerly served as the Chairman of the House of Lords Constitution Committee and still sits on it today.
One of his most recent actions was to introduce the Private Members Bill known as the 'Steel Bill' to achieve various changes to the House of Lords. Among other things this would make it easier to expel Peers who don't attend, or who otherwise fail in their duties.
Do come along on Tuesday for what promises to be a riveting and stimulating speech.

Dear all,
The end of term is finally upon us, but before everyone heads off home for
Christmas there are still plenty of exciting things to finish off your

# 8. Adams Mathematics Society Talk - The Bomber Problem and Probability
Date: Wednesday 30 NovemberTime: 7pm (refreshments served from 6.30pm)
Where: Palmerston Room, Fisher Building, St John's College
